I'm glad you were able to rescue your money. Twice now I've got money back for family members but it was so much stress for me. I've just had £100 refunded by my bank due to a sneaky practice for an online service. I dont think they will challenge but I will never again accept T&C without checking - this was a cheap product but the T&C said further payments of £49.99 a month would be taken if i didnt cancel. I thought it was a one off!
Oh Denise! For the past month or so my daughter and I have been going through all my finances and have discovered a monthly charge of a fictional entity, many subscriptions that I had forgotten I had, and other discrepancies that will save me probably $1000 a year that was just going out without my being "aware" of it. But it's the intentional scams that are infuriating! Constant vigilance is required! Good luck.
You are right with the constant vigilence, and money spent I see as more important to check now there is less coming in. I have all DDs listed and do review regularly, but it is these other payments that just appear that are so easy to miss. at least you will make savings going forward. Is it worth a request for the money to be repaid?

Even my daughter didn't want me to mention it to her husband (probably SHE was ashamed of me, like how COULD I fall for such an obvious scam!!)…but, as I said in the Note, one of the great benefits of decades of therapy is I can reveal my notable flaws and not feel shame! And besides, I think the message can help others!!! And I love my designation of "old lady." Especially your old lady!!
Yes, yes, it can happen to us all. You are right to remind us. I fell for something some years ago, but nothing as convoluted as yours and realised immediately. The only 'damage' was changing a password, so nothing lasting. My son-in-law is a techie and tends to have an eye for a scam, so anything doubtful in an email goes past his eyes first. I just had an invite to be interviewed on a Canadian radio station, but smelled something wrong and wrote to them separately - and was told it was a scam.
Btw, I was doing a very unusual scroll through S/S the other day, getting videos and happened on Jane Fonda going through her post. She said she had a letter from someone called Patricia who remembered her swimming the Tiber all those years ago. She was amazed that there was anyone living who still remembered that. She also said she was seriously ill afterwards! (I knew that was you, because you had written about that somewhere. My only connection to JF is that I was friends with Tom Hayden (RIP) at the University of Michigan back in the early 60s.
Oh, Patricia! What a nightmare this must have been! And I can only imagine your relief at getting your money back. I'm relieved just reading it. Congrats on taking such efficient action with everyone involved - police, UPS etc. So many others who would fall for this would not have the presence of mind to do that. It happened to my next-door neighbour and he felt lost and didn't know what to do. (Thankfully, I got wind of it early and interrupted the process on his computer and then had to push him to go to his bank, change accounts, etc.)
It's such an invasion, so intrusive, and so despicable. $300 is still $300, and you're all the wiser now. I actually watched the Bee Keeper twice, and could watch it again!

Ah yes. I was so impressed by Jane when she (and I) were 16. Gutsy and courageous. I only got gutsy and courageous a few decades later.

I love The Bee Keeper for the same reason. I'm elderly, somewhat tech savvy but got scammed. Lost only $300 but am the wiser for it.
